Eric on Santa Monica Pier - July 2010Going to new places is great, but sometimes revisiting a favorite place is what you’re really craving. I’ve been to tons of great places including some of the most recognizably awesome places on the planet, like The Mall in Washington DC, Hawaii, Yosemite the Grand Canyon, Idaho, and San Diego. These are definitely favorite places that I will visit over and over again. Of course my home town is a favorite, nothing like walking around and seeing (at least a few) people you know and haven’t seen for years. One of my all time favorites is Santa Monica and the pier there. That place has lots of good memories with family and friends, and I have never been disappointed. Even when it is completely fogged in I love it!

I’m not sure what it is about favorite places that has such attraction for me.  I love new places too, and sometimes new places become new favorites.  Definitely there is comfort in familiarity, but I also like to see what has changed.  Sometimes when a favorite place changes it is disturbing, like when my elementary school was torn down.  Sometimes it is a minor change and it is just “good to know” like catching up with what is happening with an old friend.

So create a list of favorite places, sometimes when you are down, out of your comfort zone, or getting to know someone new, visiting a favorite place may be just what you need.
